Gospel Piano Path › Practice Lab › Chord Helper

New tool, still being tuned. It gets most chords right, not all. Check them by ear.

Chord Helper

Give it a song and it shows the chords it hears, in numbers and letters. Your sound stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Please read: this is a helper, not an answer key.

It listens the way a computer listens, and it will not get every chord right. It can miss quick changes, mix up chords that share notes, and show rich gospel chords (9ths, 13ths, #9s) as the plain chord underneath. The parts it finds (Part A, Vamp and so on) are guesses too.

Use it as a starting point, then check every chord with your ear and your hands. If it sounds wrong, trust your ear.

Chart a song file

Pick an audio file from your computer or phone, like an MP3 you own. It takes a few seconds to listen to the whole song.

Listen live

Play a song out loud, or play and sing yourself, and it shows the chord as it hears it.

Tips
  • Piano or a singer with piano works best. A full band works, but the guesses are rougher.
  • To listen to YouTube, play it in another tab, press Listen to a browser tab, pick that tab, and turn on "Also share tab audio." This works in Chrome and Edge on a computer.
  • Rich gospel chords (9ths, 13ths, #9s) show up as the plain chord underneath. That's on purpose. Your ear adds the color.
  • Numbers use the major key, the church way. In a minor song, the home chord shows as 6m.
